Connect to a Windows server

From Windows

The Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is one of the oldest remote control protocols. It was originally created by PictureTel Corporation, which was later acquired by Microsoft. RDP client has been implemented in Windows operating systems since 2k. It can be called from Start menu or Run dialog (Ctrl + R) and execute mstsc command:

Run RDP client

In the pop-up window, input the server’s IP address and hit the Connect button:

RDP enter address

Also you can open additional options with the Show Options button. It is possible to save credentials, set display and quality configuration. One of the most useful features of RDP is its ability to use the clipboard to easily transfer files and directories between a local desktop and a remote server.

From Linux

Remmina is a popular tool used by Linux users to establish RDP-connections with remote servers. It provides a universal way to communicate and the connection steps are the same as those outlined in our guide Connect to a Linux server. But this tool is not always ideal and often does not provide a comfortable and smooth show from the remote server. So we advise you to take a look at alternatives that can work better than Remmina. For example, free Remote Desktop Client by Thincast.

This software can be easily installed using modern software distribution systems such as Flatpak or Snap. If you have Ubuntu 18.04 or newer, you can install it with just one command:

sudo snap install thincast-client

Once the installation process is complete, you will be able to connect to the remote server. Enter your LeaderGPU server’s IP-address in a Remote Desktop Server field and username in the corresponding field:

Thincast RDP connect

Windows Server generates self-signed certificates and the system warns you about. Confirm with the OK button:

Thincast RDP certificates verify

Next input connection credentials and click OK:

Thincast RDP credentials

Now you can control your server with more comfortable and smooth way then using Remmina:

Thincast connection complete

From macOS

The preferred way is using the official RDP client from Microsoft. It is available for free download from the App Store. Open the App Store and enter Microsoft Remote Desktop into the search bar. After that click two times on the GET button:

Microsoft RDP client in App Store

Next step is adding new PC connection using Add PC button:

macOS run RDP client

Enter LeaderGPU server’s IP address in a PC name field and optionally fill Friendly name. Continue with the Add button:

macOS new RDP connection

Double click on a new LeaderGPU connection and input your credentials. After that, click on the Continue button to proceed:

macOS RDP enter credentials

The final step requires you to confirm if you wish to proceed with the connection without checking the root certificate:

macOS RDP certificate verify

Congratulations, now you have full access to your LeaderGPU server:

macOS RDP connection complete
